Intermittent fasting (IF), a dietary pattern alternating between eating and fasting periods, is gaining popularity for weight loss and health maintenance. Its most common form restricts daily food consumption to a 4-12 hour window, challenging the traditional concept of three meals a day. IF aligns with our biological clock, the circadian rhythm, suggesting benefits in protection against chronic diseases. Reported benefits include improved heart health, enhanced insulin sensitivity, and favourable changes in body composition. Despite potential advantages like reduced inflammation and disease risk, IF may cause increased hunger, irritability and fatigue. Current research predominantly involves animal studies: of 104 claimed benefits, only six had moderate to high-quality evidence backing them. Other diets such as calorie restriction and the Mediterranean diet have demonstrated similar health benefits, prompting for personalized dietary approaches and professional guidance. Although IF holds promise, detailed, long-term human studies are required to conclusively establish its health effects.
