Mass torts are complex legal cases involving multiple plaintiffs suing a single defendant for common harm. Often related to pharmaceutical drugs or asbestos exposure, such cases are large-scale and diverse, leading to potential discrepancies in compensation. In the U.S., there were about 130,000 pending mass tort cases in 2019, largely tied to pharmaceutical and medical devices. However, the system has its flaws. The balance of justice vs exploitation is tipped, as high litigation costs and prolonged trials may deny victims fair compensation. Hence, urgent reforms are needed in the mass torts system to ensure fairness, accountability and efficiency.
