These typically emerge from corporate fraud or negligence that harms consumers. Widely recognized instances include asbestos exposure, flawed products, and drug lawsuits. Notably, the asbestos case from the 70s, where firms knowingly exposed workers to asbestos, resulted in about $37 billion in victim compensations. The opioid crisis has seen similar torts within the pharmaceutical industry. Rather than isolated events, mass torts are increasingly commonplace. In 2020 alone, federal courts saw over 100,000 mass tort filings, a steep 227% increase from the previous year. Over 90% of these cases related to pharmaceutical and medical devices. Currently, multi-district litigation, a process designed to streamline complex cases, makes up 52% of all federal civil cases. Each case's human cost, measured in life-changing impacts and losses, underlines the grim reality and scale of mass torts in the US.
